Stok’d Cannabis Year In Review: 2023 

Woosh there goes another year! 

Before we get into all the numbers, events and people we want to highlight in our Stok’d Cannabis Year in Review, we want to start with you. 

Yes, you. 

Beyond being a cool South Western Ontario independent cannabis brand (if we do say so ourselves 😁) we strive to be a community. 

Not in a culty, weird way like when your corny boss says “we’re all family here” before he lays you off before the holidays. We say community in a way that you genuinely feel like we care about you beyond what you purchase. Because we do.

So yeah, we want to start by saying, from toque to long johns, thank you so much for being part of the Stok’d family. Before selling fire cannabis was a business it was a labour of love. 

If you’ve read any of her rants in Lisa’s Life in Weed, you know that it takes a special kind of people to embark on what Stok’d has embarked on, together with you.

It’s been said that we overestimate what we can accomplish in a day and underestimate what we can accomplish in a year. 2023 was a year of stepping out for Stok’d as we continue to mature as a brand and a company. 

Beyond all the numbers we are people who simply love great weed and are forever grateful to live in a country where we can do so legally. As for 2024 and resolutions and all that, we’ll leave it for another time. Let’s just say that we have every intention of coming back with even more to share next year.

My 15-Minutes of Fame 

That One Time I Became Ontario Famous 

It’s Friday night, Brian and I sat down to watch a movie at about seven o’clock and we smoked a joint, which we actually hadn’t done in a few months. I don’t even remember what the movie was because as soon as it started my phone buzzed and I was like, “I got to turn that off” but I looked at the email I got and it was from the AGCO saying, “You’ve been selected to participate in the cannabis retail store licence program”. Now, I’m high af at this point so I’m like, “wait….what? Is this a joke? did I just get selected!?” 

Before the Lottery 

I hadn’t officially planned to join the legal cannabis industry. Had never officially dreamed of it like many did. A lifelong consumer? Sure I was and proudly. But my day-job was working at the Rotman School of Management and, at 53, I was wearing the “golden handcuffs” and banking on a great pension in 12 years. My brother was working for a large cannabis company and at a family gathering over the 2018 holidays had told us that Premier Doug Ford was opening up cannabis retail to the ‘free market’, and anyone was going to be able to apply for a retail store licence. 

We were always fascinated with the goings on in the industry and were like, “cool yeah let us know when it happens.” That was kind of it.

So one morning the week that the lottery was happening, he emailed all of us. I’ve got a bunch of brothers, their wives, my grown nieces and nephews, and he emailed everyone that the retail license lottery was on. It was $75 and here’s the link. So I submitted an application for Brian, and I submitted one for me. $150 into the lottery abyss. It felt like buying a Princess Margaret Hospital Lottery ticket, buy-it and forget-it” unless you get the phone call. I got ready for work as usual and made my way to the subway.  

Flash back a few weeks before and I had asked my brother, who’s an award winning marketer, to speak in a Marketing Strategy program at Rotman. The previous week, he was nominated as Marketer of the Year by Strategy Magazine, so I went on Twitter to do some promo for the course, and shared that my brother was lined up to speak in the Rotman program (so ‘sign up now!’). Little did I know that my Twitter page was about to be raided – searched by all these people I didn’t know, and they’re going to immediately make the connection between me being a lottery winner and my brother working in the cannabis industry. 

Winning the Lottery

Where was I? Right – the night that changed my life. Shortly after getting the email from the AGCO, and while I was still trying to figure out whether or not it was real, my phone started to blow up. I got what felt like hundreds of emails, social media notifications and text messages within the first few hours. I was completely overwhelmed and I went into full panic mode. In an attempt to anonymize myself, I changed my last name on Facebook to my husband’s without having the chance to tell my close friends. That honestly made things worse because now I had all my friends messaging me about changing my name. I couldn’t breathe.  

But here I was getting bombarded by consultants, lawyers, “investors”, cannabis retailers, and random people who wanted to know if I was ‘the Lisa Bigioni who was selected in the lottery’. The AGCO had set a few milestones in the application process, and lots of people knew they were lofty for anyone not familiar with the process (who was?!) to meet. 

At the same time cannabis Twitter started dragging my name through the mud. Cannabis activist Jody Emery is tweeting about me. And of course, she had a massive following and everybody is tweeting and retweeting and slagging me online and I’m like, “what is going on? I don’t even know what’s happened here. But all of a sudden all these people hate me.”

One guy said, “If the sister of an executive got picked, then the lottery is fixed. I’m going to Vic Fideli’s house (he was the finance minister for the province) and I’m going to ask him what the hell is going on.” It was really intense. There was an article above-the-fold in The Globe & Mail Report on Business that said, there’s at least one familial connection to the lottery. I was like, “Holy Fuck what is going on?!
What have I done?” I was being cancelled before I had the chance to be…anything!

The Mad Rush That Followed 

One of the challenges imposed by the lottery process was needing to have the store open by April 1st, or face a $50,000 fine (more on that later). It was already mid-January and I needed to find a location in the western part of the province—a big swath covering London, Windsor, Niagara, Hamilton. We had to find a landlord willing to rent to cannabis retailers, negotiate a lease, build a store with all the security and regulations considered. 

If that wasn’t enough I also needed to stock that store with a shit-ton of very expensive weed that I knew nothing about yet (turns out there’s a lot more to know than it gets you high and giggly) hire a staff, add security to the store and a lot of other blah blah blahs that cost a lot of money. And a final challenge reared its head: banks were not willing to lend to the cannabis industry. That’s right, they wouldn’t lend $1 towards helping me or anyone else build a successful, legal (!) small business. 

I didn’t have a ton of time to figure out options, so Brian and I decided we’d consider partnering with an established cannabis retailer to open the store and then when they bought it from us, we’d take that money and do our own thing. In exchange for the use of my licence, they’d foot the bill for the whole shebang. I’d still be the owner (I had to be because it was my licence) but they would have the right to put their name on the store.  

The following Monday morning I found out that media people had been calling the University of Toronto looking for me. Unfortunately they started to reach out to another Lisa who had taken over a job I previously held. So people are phoning her saying,” Are you Lisa? Are you the one that won the lottery? Can we have an interview?” She messaged me later that morning “um, did you win a lottery or something, cuz my phone is ringing off the hook.” 

The Globe & Mail, the Canadian Press, the CBC, local radio stations – all of these journalists were reaching out to me and the other 24 lottery winners to give interviews. The Rotman School had to put out a bulletin saying if anyone calls asking for Lisa Bigioni, please forward all requests to the communications department. Big, staid, oldest university in Canada and….cannabis? No. They were having none of it. I was mortified! like, “my God this is gotten out of fucking control.” 

That first afternoon I’m in my boss’s office and my first offer came in from a prospective retail partner. They were a group from out west that had sold all of their stores, and were now trying to open up in Ontario. I got the first offer and….it was big. I started to cry. I showed my boss my phone and she’s like, “you need to go home and take the week off.”

So I did, and I got to work finding a lawyer, and an accountant. And as I read through that first offer, I realized I knew nothing about contracts and I didn’t really understand what had been proposed. I’ve never felt more stupid in my life. One of my brothers works in construction and works with contracts regularly so I wrangle him into the fray.  

Throughout that first week my stress level was through the roof. I was getting two hours of sleep a night, I was fielding all these calls and questions I had no idea how to deal with. I was trying to negotiate at levels I had never negotiated before. I was spinning in circles. The first thing that the AGCO required was that you had to have a signed letter of credit for $50K from a schedule 1 or schedule 2 bank by the following Friday (narrator: she had to google what a schedule 1 and schedule 2 bank were). So we had a week to get that. I think to myself, we own a home and we have a home equity line of credit that we could draw the 50K from, so that’s not a problem. (Narrator again: it was a problem.)

One of the other lottery winners called me on Monday night and asked if I had my letter of credit yet? This is the first day any of us could have tried. And I said, No, I’m just gonna go to the bank tomorrow but I have a home equity line of credit so I’m not worried. He said, “None of the banks are giving letters, nobody can get this letter of credit. It’s a huge problem.”

So, I go to my bank first thing Tuesday morning and they have no idea what I’m talking about. They’ll call me back. I speak to another bank I’ve been told is ‘cannabis friendly’ and they have no idea what I’m talking about. They’ll call me back. I don’t have time for call backs. A friend knows someone at BMO and that friend puts me in touch with an executive there who was ‘in charge of the cannabis file’. So now it’s Tuesday, and they’ve scheduled a meeting for me to meet this VP for Wednesday morning. Remember I need the letter for Friday or I get disqualified by the AGCO – and I’ve already paid retainers to a lawyer and an accountant. 

On Wednesday I go to an office on a super high floor of some big ass office building. And remember, I haven’t slept in days and I am frazzled. I would put my head on the pillow and then I’d pop back up to take notes or send emails, or stress about something that I’d forgotten about. I was so stressed out. So we go to this meeting and this VP of blah, blah, blah brings a team of three other people into the room.

He says, “okay, so we found out that the AGCO doesn’t actually need the letter by Friday. They just need confirmation that the letter is in process because, by the way, we can’t give you the letter this week. It takes at least three weeks for us to do the anti-money laundering due diligence. And I’m like, “that’s what the AGCO told you? Do you have that in writing?” He says, “I have an email from my colleague, who said the AGCO said they just need confirmation the letter of credit is in process.”

“Do you fucking think that I’m going to believe you – some random dude who says he has an email from another random dude and not from the AGCO directly?! Are you fucking kidding me?” Apologies for the language but I kind of lost it on him. He was wasting time I didn’t have, and he’s got 3 people in the room trying to learn from me. Sorry but I’m not here to educate you guys on the process. I need a letter of credit STAT. 

Looking Back 

Eventually I was able to get the letter from the only bank that was offering them (actually a credit union that was backed by a schedule 2 bank) and they ended up working with all 25 lottery winners. The writing between the lines here is that the AGCO imposed a condition on the lottery that was almost impossible to meet. There was literally ONE bank that could do it. But banking was only the first of many hurdles I had to jump over, and only one of the ridiculous challenges imposed by the AGCO. From application fees to professional fees, I had committed about $80k within the first 2 weeks into a virtual unknown opportunity and so far, I was seriously questioning whether or not it was worth it. 

This was the most stressful process I have been through my entire life and I didn’t know if I could do it. For two and a half months I cried at least seven times a day (seriously, ask Brian). For the first three weeks I was running on two hours sleep a night. I was so stressed out at the prospect of being disqualified and losing all of this money for pursuing this opportunity on a whim. And everyone would know if I screwed it up cuz my name was splattered all across the fucking country! 

This is only half the story 

This story’s getting long now, but it ain’t over. I’ll follow up another time with some details on needing to find, negotiate and sign a lease the following week, and partnering up with a big brand from B.C. and the chaos that ensued. But as crazy as those first few months were, I’m incredibly lucky to have won the lottery that changed my life in so many ways. I have choice words for those that made the process way more difficult than it needed to be, but overall I look at what the lottery has done for Brian and me, and what Stok’d has become and I wouldn’t change that for the world.

The Big Picture 

5 years in and it’s a perfect time to reflect on the good, the bad and the ugly of legal weed. It seems like only yesterday that, after decades of prohibition, cannabis was declared legal in Canada! But hold up—before we get into all that let’s start with some gratitude for living in a country with the courage to legalize weed. It’s not a perfect model, by any means, but there’s one statistic that should shine above all others in this conversation: 

In 2017, 16,697 Canadians were arrested for cannabis related offences. In the two years following legalization that number dropped to 2,550, a decrease of 85%! 

Regardless of how you feel about the rollout of the legal cannabis industry, I think we can all agree that the biggest victory of the past 5 years is that we can all walk down the street smoking a joint without fear of arrest—just the judgement from the guy walking behind us because the stigma is still real. 

What’s Worked 

Staying with this positive vibe for a minute, we should also point to the overwhelming financial windfall that legal weed has contributed to our society. $43.5 billion to Canada’s GDP and $13.3 billion to Ontario’s GDP. To put that into perspective, The Canadian Forces budget for 2023 is $26.5 billion .

Another win is that the legal market now holds a majority of the market share over illicit/legacy cannabis, something the early skeptics said would be impossible. During the recent pandemic (remember that?!) cannabis was declared essential and our stores were allowed to stay open during most of the lockdowns.

In fact, our first 2 stores were opened under lockdown, leaving us only able to meet folks at the door for curbside pickup. Finally, from a Lisa/Stok’d perspective, Canadians who want to build small businesses in the cannabis industry are now free to do so.

What Hasn’t 

Ok now that we’ve given my fellow optimists something to cheer about, we have to be honest about how far we still have to go to build an industry that works for everyone—and not just the tax man and corporate weed. Here are my top 8 things that need to be changed ASAP if we’re going to have a thriving industry on the 10 year anniversary of legalization. 

Sustainable Packaging

As I mentioned in my email last week, we can and must do more to shift towards sustainable packaging. Hemp plastic and other compostable materials are available, we just need to find a way to bring them into our industry. Let’s be as green as the buds we love to smoke!  

Edibles Capped at 10mg 

I can empathize with regulators when it comes to setting edible limits. Edibles can cause extreme discomfort if someone over-consumes. Since everyone’s tolerance is vastly different (even among daily consumers) it’s a big challenge to get the dosage limits right. Having said that, by capping at 10mg per package of THC you’re effectively leaving out a humongous segment of consumers for whom 10mg may have little or no effect. It’s just too expensive for some folks to purchase the dosage they need. I support 10mg/piece but would like to see the limit bumped to 100mg per package + consumer education campaigns to let new consumers know they need to “start low and go slow”. 

Carry Limits of 30g 

Adjacent to the limits on edibles is the limit for consumers walking around with no more than 30g of dried flower. This is a pretty low limit when you consider lots of daily smokers can consume an ounce in less than a week. And why does it matter how much I’m carrying since it has no relation to how much I’m consuming RIGHT NOW? Imagine being told you can never have more than one 26-er on you at any time? And think of the last time you bought and had more than that on you – doesn’t mean you’re consuming it all at once, right?  Some stores get around this by creating multiple orders but this is a sketchy workaround since it puts both the retailer and consumer into a questionable legal situation. With medical consumers entitled to carry as much as 150 grams of flower there’s definitely room to raise the recreational limit without coming close to the medical one – or eliminating the limit all-together. 

Fair Competition 

Even though corporate retail stores are shutting down or declaring bankruptcy (🙄 Looking at you Fire & Flower who stole the spot we wanted in Morningside Mall), large public companies are able to engage in price wars and take huge losses. Independent retailers don’t have the luxury of existing in the red so either have to follow the race to the bottom (which also harms micro cultivators) or close their doors. It’s a whole different ball game when you’re spending investor’s money instead of your own. 

Unregulated Retailers  

We’re also squeezed by the unregulated shops in our neighbourhoods, unable to compete on price or marketing due to crazy and overreaching regulations. Government needs to either regulate these unlicensed shops or remove some of the restrictions around inducements (i.e. discounts and free products) that give them a leg up in marketing.

Fair Regulation 

Speaking of marketing, both retailers and cultivators alike need to be given more opportunities to build their brands by marketing to their customers. Currently we’re severely limited, both in terms of regulations but also with the anti-cannabis terms of service most social media platforms operate with. We’re on our 5th (!) Instagram account and have never been told what we did wrong to cause the previous 4 to be deleted. 

End Stigmatization 

A giant plank of prohibition may have been removed 5 years ago today, but that doesn’t mean cannabis businesses and consumers are welcomed in all corners of society. Whether it’s our banks charging exorbitant fees just to open an account or our cities denying licences for consumption lounges or the microaggressions we still get for being “stoners” at family gatherings, we have a lot of work to do to normalize cannabis in this country. 

To say nothing of the 61 municipalities in Ontario that represent over 1 million people that don’t allow any legal retailers, including Vaughan, Whitby, Markham, Newmarket and Caledon. When it comes to the private sector, cannabis businesses also have to contend with banks that treat us like we’re money launderers, insurance companies whose policies tend toward a 401 robbery, and landlords who jack up rents thinking they’ve won the lottery when a cannabis retailer comes calling. 

Sensible Tax Reform

Finally, we also need to address the tax liabilities cultivators are saddled with or we’ll only have a few large corporate growers who, *checks notes, largely haven’t been able to produce weed that people actually enjoy. For those who don’t know, the excise tax was set at $1/gram, which was set when it was thought that weed would be wholesaling at $8-10/gram. I’ll quote Matt Lamers from MJBIZ.com as to why the current tax rate is cuckoo bananas: 

“The excise formula was created by policymakers who expected wholesale prices for flower – the most popular consumer segment – to be at least CA$10 per gram…Current wholesale prices are closer to CA$2.75 per gram or less, depending on the product, with some flower coming in under CA$1 per gram.”

Looking Ahead   

So there you have it, my many hot takes on how to make the next 5 years of legalization a success. We’ve come a long way from 2018 and we need to celebrate (woohoo!!) but we also have a long way to go and should be honest about that too.

In this article we will break down a short history of weed in Canada as well as an intro to cannabis terms to help you navigate the abundance of choice we now have. The History of Cannabis Legislation in Canada

Timeline 

1908 – Future Prime Minister, notable racist and general fuddy-duddy, William Mckenzie King investigated anti-Asian race riots in Vancouver only to learn that, *clutches pearls, white women were using opium! Rather than address the anti-Asian racism brewing in BC “Weird Willie” used the opportunity to target recreational drug use. He led the charge to create criminal penalties for opium consumption and laid the foundation for future cannabis prohibition without any evidence or parliamentary debate. 

1922 – Heritage Minute star, feminist baddie and the first woman magistrate in the British Empire, Emily Murphy published a series of articles in McLean’s magazine on the topic of narcotics under the name of Janey Canuck. As much as we don’t love what she wrote her pen name was pretty rad. These articles formed the basis for the book The Black Candle and was widely influential in the racist, anti-drug hysteria that was gripping the country. In it, “she refers to the Chinese man as a ‘visitor’ in this country, and that ‘it might be wise to put him out’ if it turns out that this visitor carries ‘poisoned lollipops in his pocket and feeds them to our children’”. Sound familiar? In the book she talked extensively about the “new menace” of marijuana, and how it turns users into “homicidal maniacs”. A fair and balanced take if we’ve ever heard one. 🥴 It’d be hilarious and awesome if someone put out a weed strain called “The Black Candle” or “Janey Canuck”? Also why does all anti-drug propaganda make illegal drugs seem so cool?

1923 – Cannabis is added to the list of illegal drugs in a late-night vote in Parliament on April 23. However it didn’t attract attention from the feds until the late 1930s. 

1937 – The first cannabis seizure happens by the Narcotics Division of the RCMP. No word if any of the officers on scene samples any of the goodies. 

1938 – Mystifying nearly 100 years later, industrial hemp is declared illegal because nothing says “tough on drugs” like banning t-shirts, sails and cooking oil. 

1968 – Between the 1930s and early 1960s cannabis accounts for only 2% of drug arrests. However between 1961 and 1968 arrests for cannabis possession rose to 2,300 cases. While previously the targets for criminal penalties were working class Black and Asian communities, middle class white students and hippies were getting caught up in Canada’s anti-drug laws. Calls for change begin to grow louder.

1972 – With arrests increasing to 12,000 cases by 1972 the government’s Royal Commission Into the Non-Medical Use of Drugs (aka The Le Drain Commission) published its findings and called for the decriminalization of cannabis. A recommendation to remove cannabis from illegal drugs was largely ignored. 

2001 – Following a series of Supreme Court rulings in the 1990s, the federal government amended the Controlled Drug and Substances Act to include the “Medical Marihuana Access Regulations”. Apart from the dubious spelling, these regulations allowed patients to access cannabis from home grows or buying directly from Health Canada. #governmentweed

2013 – New regulations allow for a commercial cannabis industry to form for medical patients. The number of authorized consumers by Health Canada grew from around 100 in 2001 to almost 40,000 by 2013. 

2016 – World’s worst Halloween costume wearer, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau fulfils major campaign promise to begin the process of cannabis legalization for adult use. The Task Force on Marijuana Legalization and Regulation was the basis for the legislation that would make Canada the first G7 and G20 country to legalize cannabis. Most of the country rejoices although many legacy cannabis operators complain about the strict legal framework. 

2018 – The Cannabis Act came into law on October 17, 2018. Although sales would follow some month later, this day is celebrated by cannabis consumers as the end of cannabis prohibition in Canada, nearly 100 years since it was placed in the category of illegal drugs. 

Medical Cannabis vs. Recreational Cannabis: What’s the Difference?

Legally there’s a big difference. As a company that operates in the legal cannabis industry we aren’t allowed to talk about any medical benefit that cannabis might have. We sell a recreational product and we can get into trouble with regulators if we stray from that lane. You, the consumer, are free to research any alleged positive or negative effects cannabis may deliver, but we can’t talk about it either online or in our stores. 

Having said that, anyone who consumes cannabis on a regular basis is aware that, in some ways, medical cannabis vs recreational cannabis (aka adult use cannabis) is a distinction without a difference. There are those patients who rely on cannabis either to treat their illness(es) or to manage the symptoms such that they can get through the day. In no way do we want to diminish the power of cannabis in a medical context. However, most adults in the modern world deal with stress as a major detriment to their health. We also deal with disconnection, a huge impediment to mental wellness. Cannabis not only helps us relax, but it’s often the catalyst for friendship and community. Further muddying the waters is that many medical consumers derive pleasure and joy from their cannabis consumption, in addition to the symptom relief it provides. 

Cannabis in Canada 101: Terms and Definitions

One of the lagging impacts of prohibition is a lack of scientific understanding by the general public. Cannabis was in the shadows so long that we’re only now starting to get a grasp how it affects us and why. Another challenge when it comes to consumer education is that cannabis has such a diverse effect on people. The same strain from the same producer in the same lot consumed at the same time can have vastly different effects on two people of similar age and body type. But we do need to start somewhere if consumers are to have any hope of understanding cannabis and how it can work for them. So we are sharing some key definitions that you’ll see in any dispensary or online conversation. 

Giant Pound of Salt 

There is a lot of debate between scientists, consumers, educators and growers about all of these definitions. However, for the newbies these debates may not be relevant yet. If you’re an OG please don’t shout at us, we aren’t saying anything definitive just giving new consumers a place to start. 

What is THC? 

THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol, is one of the many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plants. It’s the primary psychoactive component responsible for the “high” people experience when using cannabis. THC works by binding to specific receptors in the brain and central nervous system, known as cannabinoid receptors. This interaction triggers a cascade of chemical reactions, altering the release of neurotransmitters and resulting in changes in perception, mood, and cognition. Its effects can vary depending on the dose and individual sensitivity, ranging from relaxation and euphoria to altered sensory perception. Tldr – THC is what gets you high and has an intoxicating effect. The level of intoxication depends on your tolerance, ie how much and how often you consume cannabis. 

What is Indica?

Indica is one of the two main subspecies of cannabis plants, alongside Sativa. Indica strains are known for their distinct characteristics, such as shorter stature, broader leaves, and a tendency to induce relaxation and sedation. In the medical context, indica products are commonly used for pain relief, muscle relaxation, and aiding sleep. You may have heard the term “in da couch”. This is a reference to the super mellow feeling that some people get when they smoke, vape or consume weed with a high indica content. 

What is Sativa? 

Sativa, like Indica, is another subspecies of the cannabis plant. Sativa strains are typically taller with narrower leaves and are known for their uplifting and energizing effects. The cerebral and euphoric sensations associated with Sativa strains are thought to result from the interaction between THC and the brain’s cannabinoid receptors, particularly the CB1 receptors, which play a role in mood regulation. In layman’s terms, a strong sativa strain is more likely to make you want to paint your house than sink into your chesterfield. 

What is CBD? 

CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a very mildly-intoxicating compound found in cannabis. It has gained significant attention for its potential therapeutic benefits. Not that we’d know anything about that. Scientifically, CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, a complex network of receptors and neurotransmitters in the body. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce a “high” but has been studied for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anxiolytic, and neuroprotective properties. Researchers believe that CBD influences our neurotransmitter systems. English please? There are many many potential benefits of CBD and a fair number of studies are out there to back this up. But you didn’t hear that from us 😉 

What are Terpenes? 

Terpenes are aromatic compounds found throughout nature not just in cannabis plants. In cannabis, they contribute to the distinctive flavours and scents of different strains. Terpenes play a fascinating role in the entourage effect, where the combination of various compounds like cannabinoids and terpenes, work together to provide a unique experience and benefits we can’t talk about. The entourage effect has nothing to do with Turtle or Johnny Drama but rather is how the combination of goodness that various parts of the cannabis flower can create in our bodies. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts type thing. For example, myrcene, commonly found in Indica strains, may make you want to lay down, while limonene, found in citrusy strains, may make you want to have a dance party in your kitchen.

Now that we’ve walked the regulatory minefield of cannabis terms, we can unclench our butt cheeks and get back into an area of consumer education we are allowed to talk about. An Ode To Our Neighbourhood: Eglinton East 

While there are more well known neighbourhoods in Scarborough we are proud to be helping put Eglinton East on the map. We feel strongly that the community is experiencing a resurgence in growth and we are stoked to be part of it! However before we can look at what the future holds we get to soak ourselves in the rich history of Eglinton East. 

History of Eglinton East 

Eglinton Avenue is the longest continuous east/west thoroughfare and stretches from Mississauga in the west to Scarborough in the east. The name Eglinton comes from Scottish settlers in Toronto in the 19th century. While parts of Scarberia can trace their roots to the 19th century, until the 1940s Eglinton East was mostly farmland surrounding the inner suburbs of Toronto. Historically known as Knob Hill, it has long been home to new Canadians arriving in search of a better life. 

Post World War 2 

During the war years, development of this residential and commercial neighbourhood began in earnest. However it wasn’t until after World War 2 did the area see its first big boom in development. There were returning soldiers who required housing and a series of single family home developments were constructed. Hot on the heels of returning veterans was a wave of Eastern European immigrants looking to rebuild their lives after the devastation of the war. These demographic trends cemented Eglinton East’s reputation as a working class neighbourhood, which continues to this day.

Eastern European Immigration  

Although this period saw an influx of immigration from Eastern Europe generally, in particular it was home to large numbers of Macedonians and Bulgarians who moved to East Scarborough at this time. While we don’t know if famous businessman and Torontonian Steve Stavro ever lived in Eglinton East, he was certainly part of the Macedonian and Bulgarian community of East Toronto. The grocery store magnate and pioneer also named his flagship store Knob Hill Farms, a reference to our neighbourhood’s historical name. 

Waves of Immigration Continue 

By the 1970s and 80s, new Canadians from other parts of the globe came to flourish in Eglinton East. They hailed from China, Jamaica, the Philippines and, more recently, Sri Lanka. In addition to the economic and population growth of Eglinton East, we have some of the best ethnic restaurants in Scarborough, thanks in part, to these communities.

Neighbourhood Geography 

Our lively borough is defined by Kennedy Road to the West, Lawrence Ave to the north, Markham Road to the east and of course Eglinton Ave East to the south. The southern border is also made up of CNR rail line as well as the Eglinton Go Station, a short walk away from Stok’d Eglinton. 

Transit and Transportation 

In addition to the Eglinton Go Station, our neighbourhood is served by the TTC. The closest subway stop is Kennedy Station on Line 2 and the 116 Morningside bus will get you within shouting distance of our shop. Both Lawrence Ave and Eglinton Ave East are major thoroughfares for commuters heading from both the outer and inner suburbs of the eastern GTA to downtown Toronto. Another major road is Brimley Rd, which will take you south to the Scarborough Bluffs <links to Bluffs articles>. 

Eglinton Crosstown 

For any Torontonians reading this and especially anyone from the Scarbs, new transportation lines can feel like Captain Ahab’s whale. Yet after years of delays and budget overruns, it looks like (*knocks wood, crosses fingers) that the Eglinton Crosstown line will be finished by 2024. Stretching from the borders of Mississauga to nearby Kennedy Subway station in Scarborough, the light rail line should provide current and new residents of Eglinton East a faster way to move around the city.  

Eglinton East LRT 

Scarborough transit is undergoing major changes with the Scarborough RT set to close while the new Line 2 subway extension is built. A stop is planned for the corner of Lawrence Ave and McCowan Rd. In addition the Eglinton East LRT is also slated to be built with a major hub connecting with the Eglinton Go Station on the CNR rail line. While we are used to delays with transit in Scarborough, we hold out hope that these projects will mean convenient transportation for the residents of both Eglinton East and Toronto in general. 

Parks 

We are blessed to have a few great parks in our neighbourhood. Great for enjoying an afternoon of elevated relaxation, after stopping by Stok’d Eglinton of course 😉: 

Glen Ravine Park

“This 2.4 hectare park lies between Glen Ravine Junior Public School to the east and Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School to the west. It features open green space and soccer fields as well as outdoor fitness equipment at south end off Gilder Drive.”

Knob Hill Park

“A 13.5-hectare park on Brimley Road near Danforth Road that features a lit ball hockey court, two lit basketball courts, an outdoor swimming pool, a wading pool and a children’s playground. The park also features a naturalized ravine with walking trails along West Highland Creek.”

Cedar Brook Park 

“This 18.6-hectare park near Markham Road and Lawrence Avenue East features many trails, a picnic area and a children’s playground set in the naturalized ravine of West Highland Creek.” 

Restaurants and Shopping 

Most of the shopping and restaurants in Eglinton East are quite close to our shop, although there are a number of establishments on Danforth Road (not to be confused with Danforth ave, aka The Danforth in East Toronto) and Midland Ave. Here’s a few examples of what you can find as far as great eats and shopping in Eglinton East. 

Stephen’s No Frills Scarborough

Located just down the road from us, Stephen’s is a popular grocery store for the community and serves a number of nearby neighbourhoods. 

Shorebazaar Supermarket 

A longtime bakery and grocery store serving Halal products, another popular grocery store for the neighbourhood, also on Eglinton Ave East.

Swiss Chalet 

As we’ve said on our location page, it’s a little dangerous being so close to Swiss Chalet. Let’s just say it’s hard to be disciplined when you can almost smell the rotisserie chicken when step outside 😅. 

HoneyB Hives Restaurant 

Serving great eats from breakfast to late-night, butter chicken poutine to bubble tea, HoneyB Hives is a neighbourhood staple just west of Stok’d Eglinton. 

Anjappar South Indian Cuisine 

Serving up spice since 1964, Anjappar is another neighbourhood favourite. Trust us, Hot Ones ain’t got nothing on the heat you’ll find at Anjappar. It’s also open late for those with the munchies. 

Souvlaki Palace 

The Greek food available in East Toronto and Scarborough is unmatched and Souvlaki Palace is no exception. Traditional meat-on-skewers plus a decent pizza makes this spot a go-to for the community of Eglinton East. It’s a great place to satisfy cannabis-related cravings, IYKYK. 

Tasty Jollof 

Serving up West African fare, Tasty Jollof is located on Danforth Drive, close to Souvlaki Palace. If you’ve never tried Nigerian jollof you’re truly missing out on some great eats! 

Jamaica Stamp Real Island Food 

Last but not least, Jamaica Stamp offers traditional Jamaican cuisine like jerk chicken, curry goat and oxtail. Located on Midland Ave, Jamaica Stamp is another great spot to go for stoner snack time.

What the Future Holds for Eglinton East 

While the early waves of post-war development saw many single family homes, in recent decades highrise apartments and condominiums have become the norm. According to some websites, the cost of buying Eglinton East homes are below the (let’s be honest,e ridiculously high) price in comparison to other parts of the GTA. This combined with long-promised transportation improvements may bring about a resurgence to this residential and commercial neighbourhood. Either way, we see Eginton East remaining a strong, vibrant, diverse community for many years to come.

Conclusion

Stok’d ‘Spliffside’ 

Whether you start or end your day on the Scarborough Bluffs at Stok’d Cliffside, we stand as proud as the escarpment to be part of this neighbourhood. Just a short drive to Bluffer’s Park and Beach, stopping off at our shop to get your stoner supplies for a great day outdoors is a must. If you need to pick up snacks for the day, we have a Bulk Barn right next door. Once you’re finished soaking in the views and activities of the Scarborough Bluffs there’s plenty of great eats on Kingston road and our budtenders are happy to recommend their favourites. 

History of the Scarborough Bluffs 

The limestone cliffs that make up the escarpment of the Scarborough Bluffs stretches 90 m (300 feet for the metrically impaired 😂) above the cool waters of Lake Ontario at their highest point. Many people don’t know that the name of this majestic wonder has changed a few times over the years. If you’ve studied Canadian history in school the Scarborough Bluffs have featured prominently in the evolution of the region. Indigenous peoples created agricultural settlements, water and portaging transportation routes in the area and waterways around the Scarborough Bluffs. We learned that “Chi Sippi” is the name the Anishnawbe used for the Rouge River, which means Large Creek, although we weren’t able to find any other references to any Indigenous names of the Scarborough Bluffs themselves. The first Europeans in the area were French traders in the 1600s. They named The Scarborough Bluffs “Les Grands Ecores” which translates to “the tall points or cliffs on the shore” (thanks Wikipedia 😅). 

Once the Brits came to town, surveyor ​​Alexander Aitken creatively named the area the High Lands in 1788. Wife of Upper Canada’s first Lieutenant Governor – a thoroughly complicated historical figure and the reason for Ontario’s August long weekend – Elizabeth Simcoe thought the Bluffs reminded her of home in Yorkshire, a little place called Scarborough. The Scarborough Bluffs, as they are known today, were called the Scarborough Highlands for over a century, in addition to the township that grew up around it. 

Originally much larger, much of the Scarborough Bluffs on the western side were blasted away to make room for the industries and settlers that flocked to the area. Even today, development and erosion are a strain on the Scarborough Bluffs and visitors are warned to stay within the boundaries to avoid injury. 

Community & Neighbourhoods 

The Bluffs aren’t just a great place to visit, many people live here too. The area around them has some of the swankiest homes and neighbourhoods   in Scarborough. Before we dive into how to spend a day at Scarborough’s hidden gem, here’s some intel on the community around The Bluffs. 

Cliffside 

Home to Stok’d Cliffside, or “Spliffside” as customer’s christened it, is one of the oldest residential neighbourhoods in Scarborough. The most likely spot for visitors and residents alike is Cliffside Village, a stretch of Kingston Road with shops, cafes and restaurants. Tree lined streets with flags and murals of the neighbourhood make this a quaint but lively place to visit. In addition to Cliffside Village, there’s some beautiful old homes that also draw in the architecture nerds. Built up in the 20s, 30s, 40s and post-war era, the houses of Cliffside are worth spending a day to discover: 

“Cliffside houses were built mostly in the 1920’s, 30’s, and 40’s. These houses include an eclectic mix of architectural styles including Tudor, Cape Cod, Edwardian, Craftsman style bungalows and newer, contemporary homes. Chine Drive south of Kingston Road is known for its fine collection of Tudor and Elizabethan style houses that are set back from the road in a forest like setting. Fishleigh Drive, located at the south end of this neighbourhood, offers homeowners magnificent views of Lake Ontario.” 

Cliffside is boundaried by Kennedy Road to the west, St Clair Ave East to the north, Brimley Road on the East and the Bluffs on Lakeshore to the south. 

Birch Cliff

Birch Cliff is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Scarborough, built in the 1920s from farmland surrounding The Hunt Club, a lovely golf and country club that first built by British soldiers for “hunting” foxes 🤬. Since then this community has become a mix of homes for both the muckety-mucks and middle class Scarberians. If you’re in the area you’ll want to check out the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail. In addition don’t miss The Birchcliff Cafe for coffee, a baked treat or famous pumpkin pie around Thanksgiving (The Canadian version in October for any Yankees reading this 😂). 

This neighbourhood is Beaches adjacent and although Scarborough is now “officially” 😏part of the City of Toronto, Birch Cliff has always been the bridge between the Six and the Scarbs. Bordered by Victoria Park to the west, St Clair Ave East to the north and Lake Ontario to the south and Kennedy road to the east, this community is definitely all about the Bluffs. 

Cliffcrest 

Cliffcrest, (are you sensing a naming pattern? lol), is one of the more affordable neighbourhoods near the Bluffs and is charming af. Almost a cottage vibe, which you know we love, Cliffcrest is full of single family homes and ethnic cuisine. A great place to just meander around and check out the area. Cudia Park is also a great place to spend the day. Cliffcrest is bordered by Midland ave on the west, Eglinton ave East to the north and Lake Ontario to the south and west. 

Guildwood Village 

Aka Guildwood, Guildwood Village has a history that stretches back over 100 years. The Guild Inn was built 1914 and served many purposes including a place for artists as well as a base for the Women’s Royal Navy Service during World War 2. Home to a plethora of parks, trails and recreation, Guildwood Village is one of the main neighbourhoods that has grown up around the Bluffs. Parks and recreation is not only a great show, we feel our owner Lisa <Link to Lisa Author Page> is a slightly cooler version of Lesely Knopes 😉, it’s also what Guildwood Village is all aboot: 

“Parks in Guildwood include Elizabeth Simcoe Park, Grey Abbey Park, Guild Park and Gardens, South Marine Park, and Sylvan Park. Guild Park and Gardens is notable for its collection of relics, collected from the remains of demolished buildings primarily from Downtown Toronto.”

Houseboat Marina 

Float Homes, unlike houseboats, are waterfront dwellings that exist nestled under the Scarborough Bluffs. Soundproofed from the hustle and bustle of the city, these are highly sought after for those that don’t mind being rocked to sleep Lake Ontario. These quaint watery properties always have one or two for sale and come without a land transfer fee (if you know you know). Definitely worth a gander, although having a friend invite you over probably preferred to lurking around with your camera. Speaking of gander, you’ll find lots of fowl-y friends like trumpeter swans, beavers and even salmon in this community. To get there take Brimley Road South and don’t stop till you hit the water. 

Parks

Of course we can’t talk about the Bluffs without mentioning the spectacular parks. A total of 11 City of Toronto and 7 other parks dot the 15 km coastline that make up the Scarborough Bluffs. From beachfront to hiker’s paradise to a lover’s picnic, you’ll find something for everyone in these well maintained city parks. Of course you’ll want pop by Stok’d Cliffside for some elevated treats to really enjoy these urban natural spots 😉:

Hike or bike along the Niagara River Recreation Trail

The trail runs for 56 km (35 miles for our American friends) along the river from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake. This is a great activity to get some outside chill time. You’ll be treated to a spectacular view of the Canadian and American Niagara Falls. Grown in Quebec by Plantations Cérès Inc., and distributed by @vortexcannabis under the Space Craft Flower brand, I finally gave it a try after passing it up a few times before.

I was a bit disappointed when I opened it. A muted mix of pine, damp earth and sage plus a hint of cheesy funkiness when you really sink your nose in the jar.

The buds were decent…no popcorn, but all on the smaller side. They were fluffy, but still dense, and not dry at all, even with no humidity pack included.

The flavour was more pleasant than the smell, and the best way I can describe it would be similar to the fuzzy skin of a peach. It was pretty smooth too, with the ash burning to a light grey, but not quite white.

This strain is listed as an indica-dominant hybrid, however, I found it was more of an even 50/50 split. I loved the relaxing effects that first hit. It mellowed me out almost instantly, and gradually the more uplifting effects followed. Relaxed, happy and eager to chat, it was a wonderful high, it reminded me a bit of Romulan.

If you’re looking for legal cannabis that’s going to knock you out and leave you drooling on the couch, this is not it.

However, if you have plans to see a movie or ride some roller coasters or go to a concert, or get lost in a video game then I recommend trying this one out.

The buds are beautiful, very nicely trimmed, and well taken care of with lots of orange standing out from the green and purple.

The smoke was smooth and the effects hit hard, proving that something at 23% can be extremely effective. Relaxing at first, it slowly turned into a completely functional and euphoric high that allowed me to get a few things done around the house!

Being a huge @naturalhistoryofficial fan, I had to try this limited-time offering from them.

The smell is intoxicating… it’s like sitting down for breakfast as a kid and picking out all the purple fruit loops from the box and eating only those ones.

Fairly smooth and very creamy, with the (artificial) grape flavour really coming through especially at first. Unfortunately, I found that by the end of my 1g joint the flavour turned quite acidic and was unpleasant.

It hit me quite hard for 20.5%, and the total body relaxation lasted for some time.

232 Series Black Cherry Punch Terp Sticks – Kolab Project

Literally my favourite prerolls…. Both offerings from the 232 Terp Stick series are absolutely killer. Retailing on the OCS for $24.95. Per pre-roll it breaks down to $8.30 each. The first ones I tried were the Sunday Driver, which on average, does sit a little bit lower in THC than the Black Cherry Punch.

I’ve been smoking the Black Cherry Punch option for probably about a month now and I’ve only been let down a few times due to uneven burning. (Maybe 3 times at max). Opening the pack you are greeted with a perfectly sized humidity pack which helps to keep the pre-rolls fresh and moist.

I’ve found keeping them in the original pack, with the humidity pack, kept them in the best condition to smoke. They are a little small, but I can promise you they pack a PUNCH. Slow burn throughout with a few minor hiccups (like mentioned before) and produced a beautiful oil ring around the edge of the paper.

The taste throughout is extremely gassy with minor berry flavours peeking through. These aren’t your typical black cherry punch, as found these to taste gassier on both the inhale and exhale.

Usually, I find the black cherry punch to have a sweet yet dairy taste to them, almost like cherry yogurt, which I did not notice in these. From the beginning (opening the pack) to the end (burning them) these little pre-rolls are fantastic.

I definitely recommend trying these if you have not. They are perfect for an evening smoke, especially if you are looking for a heavy-hitting punch.

What’s Wrong With Using The Terms Sativa and Indica?

It’s not entirely correct to describe cannabis strains as just two distinct cannabis groups. As their differences are only reflected in their chemical and genetic composition. There are far more varieties of indica than sativa, and many scientists believe generalising about the psychoactive and other effects of different strains is inappropriate. 

Consumers try to predict the effects of a particular cannabis product based on its sativa or indica name. However, the effects of a strain do not always match its physical properties. That’s why the Chill to Thrill approach is a much more effective way to define the effects that a certain mix of genetics. In weed journals, we can observe and record the THC/CBD ratio, terpenes, and overall user experience. 

Common Terpenes and The Entourage Effect

Frankly, the strain of cannabis may not be the best indicator of the effects you will experience. After all, each experience is unique to the individual. As research continues, we definitely are learning more about the cannabis plant, and the numerous and diverse compounds in each variety. The cannabinoids and terpenes it contains will determine the effect you feel, not the indica or sativa label.

I was super excited to see this strain again as I didn’t get to pick it up on their last drop. Coming from their website it is labeled as “the definition of exotic, straight grape deliciousness” (Organnicraft) Organnicraft comes from just outside of Vernon, British Columbia, and prides themselves on being a craft micro grow.

What comes in the bag? Opening the bag, you see a small humidity pack, helping to keep the moisture of the bud locked in. I received 4/5 decently sized nugs absolutely covered in trichomes. Stunning purple and green hues with tinges of orange. 

The first impression is being slapped in the face with a beautiful sugary grape smell. The nose on this is definitely a slight gas mixed with grapes and cream.

Smoking experience. Definitely hybrid-indica, nice and relaxing without crazy couch lock. This strain is perfect for relaxing and unwinding, or if you’re like me a perfect way to keep a level head. The taste throughout is absolutely delicious. It tastes almost exactly like it smells. Delicious grape cream with a hint of gas on the exhale.

Off Menu by Lot420 Strain Review by Budtender Carly

Well, BC was stunning! The mountains, the forests, the water, the cannabis shops stocking things not available here in Ontario.

Off Menu, from Lot420 was one of the first things I picked up. A cross between their Gelato 33 and Wedding Cake, I was hoping it would capture some of the magic of their Gelato 33, particularly the batches from last year.

It smell wasn’t quite as strong as I was hoping for, but the initial funkiness quickly turned into sweetness. I just wish a humidity pack would have been included.

The bud was beautiful. SO many crystals, the photos just don’t do it justice.

The smoke is smooth and sweet on the inhale with a cakey finish.

My jaw and temples were the first to feel the deep relaxation this cultivar provides. But as relaxed as I was, my thoughts were coherent and introspective, and I was blissfully content for the rest of the evening.

If I’d smoked it earlier in the day, I could see myself be inspired to do something creative with this by my side.

Infused prerolls are everywhere these days, and Avana Brands offering in this category is outstanding!

Infused with live resin and coated with kief, these prerolls are extremely potent. They’re also very smooth., with ash that burns almost completely white once it catches properly.

The high was slow to get going, and I wondered when I’d start to feel the effects. All of a sudden I was launched full-tilt into a wonderfully centred and euphoric state of mind that I’d definitely like to visit again!

The only issue with these is that they can be a little hard to draw from at times, but that is not unique to this particular brand. Smaller pulls tend to help with this problem.

Arguably my favourite infused pre-roll at the moment, and I’ve tried quite a few lately! Be sure to grab one (or more) if you see them!

Ok, so I’m not going to lie, I was disappointed to see that Dunn Cannabis used bags this time. Both other times I’ve bought their bud it’s come in a nice glass jar that kept everything perfect.

The buds I received looked like they had potential, but they were a bit dark, somewhat squished, so visually the bag appeal really took a hit.

That being said, I very much enjoyed everything else about this!

The smell was sweet and very gassy, but on my first two pulls I got the very unexpected taste of jalapeño Cheetos. This flavour, however didn’t stick around for long (thank goodness), and instead gave way to the gassiness and citrus I was expecting.

The ash burned white, and the smoke itself was very smooth. But also EXTREMELY strong. I almost tapped out when I was halfway through my joint, but i took a break instead and went back for the rest a little later.

Always a great experience when buying weed from this awesome dispensary in Scarborough

It made me feel content, relaxed every muscle in my body, and kept me happily locked to my seat for well over an hour.

Strain Origin and Breeder Information

While Kush and Cookies (aka Wedding Cookies) is a famous cross of Cherry Pie X [redacted] Scout Cookies, there isn’t any specific breeder information from General Admission and we can’t confirm strain origin at this time. 

General Admission recently released their 3.5g bag of Kush & Cookies flower, and I tried it out.

I wasn’t expecting too much…a plain white bag and a terpene % that’s on the low side.

The nuggets were pretty small, but they were nicely trimmed, not dry at all, and the sweet citrus flavour was really pleasant.

These rules are published by the Toronto Cornhole Association (TCA). They are in no way associated with any active ingredients in cannabis. Knowing the terms will help you understand the rules!

If you haven’t already noticed, just like cannabis, cornhole has its own set of terms which vary from group to group.

The terms sort of dictate the rules. For example, you’ll need to understand terms from “pitching” to “innings,” or “out-of-count” to “in-count,” because if you don’t know the lingo, you won’t know the rules of how to successfully score a point. But if you can throw a bag, you can play the game.

Initially, terminology such as “back door,” or a bag you throw over an in-count bag that falls into the hole, may not matter much. Be assured, you’ll know if you scored a point or won an inning based on the loud comments of your opponents.

Rather quickly, you’ll see how it works. In any case, if someone mentions it, not knowing a term or two won’t impair your performance, only the type of strain you choose can do that..

Unless you understand what it means to have “the honours”, you may miss your chance at pitching first. That’s ok though if you have a fat doobie to pass around.

1. Singles or Doubles

As with tennis, cornhole can be played one on one or as a doubles game. In one-on-one matches, both players pitch into the same hole from the same side of the court. When playing doubles, both teams face off against each other. Both teams have a player on each side.

2. Innings

Cornhole matches are divided into innings, just like baseball and softball. The players pitch four bags each during an inning.

The four bags must be played by both teams for an inning to be completed. The number of innings is not fixed.

The game ends when one team reaches 21 points. If 21 points are reached mid-inning, the inning must be completed.

3. Pitching

Pitching is the term used for throwing the bag. When playing singles, players take turns tossing  each bag until all four have been pitched, and alternately by teammates during doubles. 

There is only one bag thrown per turn. In other words, you can’t pitch all bags at once.

Players can stand on either side of the board, called the pitcher’s box, according to their preference. Interestingly, a pitcher cannot use the other arm during the entire game after choosing a pitching arm, unless medical emergencies are claimed mid-game.

You have only 20 seconds to pitch, so make them count! We have not seen a timeclock at a game, or heard anyone count aloud, though the latter might be a decent tactic to throw off an opposing player who just seems way too serious.

3. In-The-Hole

Cornhole is all about getting the properly pitched bag into the hole.

Each bag is worth three points. Keep optimistic, as anyone can get your bag in the hole. No matter who knocks it in, you earn the points!

4. In-the-Count

At the end of an inning, if a bag is on the platform but not in the hole, this is a technical term for a point, called In-The-Count, and is a good practice for several reasons.

First of all, someone else could knock it in after you. As a bonus, whenever you place a bag on the platform, you score a point. So take advantage of this great opportunity to score points.

5. Out-of-Count

Having contact with the ground is out of count. This does not earn you any points. This is likely where you’ll hear the commentary swell from your opponents.

Of importance, a point is lost if your opponent pushes your bag off the board, which is legal in the game and encouraged. Since scoring doesn’t occur until the end of the inning, in-the-count pitches may turn out-of-count, adding to the fun.

6. Pitch Rotation

Pitch rotation is based on scoring, which we discuss in more detail below.

In cancellation scoring, the player (or team) who scored in the previous inning goes first. The player who threw second in the last inning will throw first in the current inning, if neither player scored.

The first pitch rotates between teams in the event you keep tying scores.

All About Fouls in Cornhole

A foul is a violation of a rule that has to be called out by another player or judge. Look out for the following fouls:

Pitch From Out of Bounds

This seems like a no-brainer, but it needs to be defined. While pitching, the player steps over the foul line or outside the pitcher’s box.

Box Switching or Throwing from the Wrong Box

The pitcher switches boxes in an inning. Switching boxes mid-inning, or at all, is typically against the official rules of the game. Adaptations can be made if the contents of your predominant hand are impeding on your ability to smoke and play at the same time. This only applies to matches where the priority is to take a toke before playing, so use it wisely!

Not a Foul-ball, Foul Bag

• Before the bag hit the platform or went in the hole, the bag hit the ground.
• Before hitting the platform or going in the hole, the bag hit another object, such as a tree or table.
• It landed on the ground.

Bag Removed Before Final Score

During the inning, the offender loses all remaining bags. All points earned up until the foul are retained by the offender. The bag grabber cannot score any more points the rest of the inning.

A non-offender scores 12 points as if they hit all four pitches.

Dropping the Bag

If a player drops the bag after his final forward swing, it counts as his pitch. A pitch that falls before the final forward swing is not a foul, and it does not count as a pitch. Pick up the bag and pitch it again if needed.

• It’s generally accepted that your pitch should have a twist. The Cornhole experts at Stok’d suggest throwing it like a Frisbee. Whatever you do, you don’t want it to rotate though. Having a flat bag and spinning it is brilliant, but if the bag is doing somersaults, that is a problem.

• There are four pitches you need to master: airmail, blocker, slider, and push.
  • The airmail goes straight into the hole and is the most difficult to land.
  • As the bag is being landed on the front of the board, it is being slid.
  • When the bag reaches the opponent’s hole, it blocks the opponent.
  • Finally, the bag is pushed into the hole by a push.

• The most important thing is to practice as much as you can. It may sound tedious to spend a couple of hours throwing bags at the board or in the hole, but the best players do that.

Get Stok’d Techniques for Cornhole

• It is always advantageous to play doubles, so don’t be afraid to use it! The board is visible from an up-close vantage point for your teammate. Discuss it with him or her. 
• Your opponent may be able to see that your bag is blocking his attempt to push it into the hole. If that’s the case, you’ll have to choose an airmail over a slide.

• Be defensive. If you’re up against a strong opponent, you can bet on them getting the bag in the hole. Don’t let that happen. You will earn a point by placing your bag in front of the hole.

There were SO many options today to choose from. I only managed to make my mind up on a few things, but I’m happy with my selection.

@ghostdropsofficial‘s First Class Funk was the first one I tried out.

The hot pink jar was impeccably sealed (almost too well), but I was rewarded for my perseverance by a wonderfully funky aroma of pine and chocolate.

The taste was sort of mildly cheesy with a hint I’d pine, which oddly turned into a mint/cake aftertaste.

It was smooth, and after two hits I could definitely feel it in my eyes. It hit hard, but in a functional way. My body was relaxed and my stress was gone. My thoughts slowed, but I could still think and carry on a conversation, and wasn’t bothered by much.

The high sticks around for a couple of hours, tapering off nicely at the end, and considering the nugget I used for my joint was less than .5g, I’d say it was a decent value, all things considered.

What an absolute gem from Sev7n!

The aromas of cherries and berries explode out of the bag as soon as it’s opened.

There were two medium-sized buds, two smaller ones, and a wee one. They were nicely trimmed and there were plenty of trichomes visible under the microscope.

A pleasant sweetness was detectable throughout most of the joint, which was smoother than I was expecting for the price.

At the ten-minute mark, a nice high had settled in. I was mildly couch-locked, but with plenty of mental energy.

There was a talkative and somewhat euphoric aspect to it, making it a choice to consider if you’re gathering with friends and want the conversation to flow. Personally, I’d love to enjoy this just before going night-skiing!

The high was long-lasting, with a very gentle landing. After 2 hours the feelings of happiness were still noticeable.

Well, if you’re Smoking Weed with Howard Becker…

Howard S. Becker (American sociologist) proposed, in a landmark study of case reports, that individuals must realize and interpret cannabis’s psychoactive effects before they can enjoy its long-term benefits. The more one uses cannabis, the better one gets at identifying its subjective effects, which suggests that the “cannabis experience” will be interpreted differently based on one’s intake history.

So, are we all the same?

A seasoned cannabis user may enjoy a pleasant “high” after smoking a triple-barrel-double-percolated 1-gallon bong, but a novice may not. Becker’s argument has little experimental support, but it is clear that a person’s cannabis history affects their response to cannabinoids. For example, frequent cannabis users (for the purposes of this post, those who smoke four to seven days per week) may be more likely to experience tolerance to cannabis-related effects than infrequent pot users (those who smoke less than once a week).

What if I have ‘Tolerance’?

Tolerance simply refers to the fact that the user needs more of a substance to achieve the desired effects and means that he or she has become accustomed to its effects. In addition, frequent users may be able to tolerate doses of concentrated cannabis sufficient to produce negative subjective effects in infrequent users. A study of the subjective effects of cannabis should consider the individual’s cannabis usage history before making any broad conclusions.

What does history have to say about this?

Experimental evidence about tolerance in marijuana users has focused on the potential negative effects of moderate to large delta-9-THC concentrations. It is most common to observe these negative subjective effects in infrequent pot smokers in the laboratory. After smoking, researchers report elevated ratings of “Impaired,” “Confused,” and “Sluggish,” as well as decreased ratings of “Clear-headed”. According to Kirk and de Wit, infrequent marijuana users report a decrease in “Drug Liking” following a large dose of THC compared with a placebo. This may indicate that they are finding the effects of a large dose somewhat unpleasant.

But what if I really enjoy weed?

Despite these negative effects, studies of marijuana-related effects for infrequent smokers rarely mention them. Kirk and de Wit found that frequent smokers didn’t report a change in “Drug Liking” after taking a large dose. Hart and colleagues (2001) observed a dramatic increase in ratings probing positive subjective effects, such as euphoria. Moreover, after participants had smoked a doobie, negative subjective effects ratings did not show significant changes not significantly altered.
